Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know, without the jargon.

No, you can only have one trial site at a time. You are able to change this as often as you like during your first trial month, thereafter you will need to subscribe and pay for your site.

DNS records tell the internet where to send visitors, emails, and other traffic for your domain. Think of them as a phonebook entry — they match your domain name to the right server address.

If your domain is registered through TecNut and connected to a TecNut website, you probably don't need to change anything — we set it up for you.

You might need to edit DNS records if you want to:

  • Verify your domain with Google, Facebook, or another service (they'll ask you to add a TXT record)
  • Set up email with an external provider like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 (you'll need MX records)
  • Point a subdomain somewhere specific (like blog.yourdomain.com)

You can manage DNS records from your domain's management page — click Manage on the domain, then look for the DNS link. If your domain is external (registered elsewhere), you'll need to manage DNS at your current registrar instead.

Not sure what to change? Open a support ticket with the details of what you're trying to set up and we'll help you get it right.

Transferring a domain to TecNut is straightforward. Before you start, you'll need to do two things at your current registrar:

  1. Unlock your domain — turn off the transfer lock in your current registrar's settings
  2. Get your authorisation code (also called an EPP code or transfer key) — your current registrar can provide this

For .uk domains: You don't need an authorisation code. Instead, ask your current registrar to change your domain's IPS Tag to TUCOWS-CA.

Once you're ready, go to your Domains page and click Transfer In. Enter your domain name and authorisation code, set up payment, and we'll handle the rest. Transfers typically take 5-7 days.

Your website and email will usually stay working during the transfer — we preserve your existing nameservers and DNS records.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is a set of practices and strategies aimed at improving a website's visibility on search engines like Google. The primary goal of SEO is to increase organic (non-paid) traffic to a website by enhancing its relevance and authority in the eyes of search engines.

Search for a similar type of business, which you can customise to your business. Alternatively, let us know and we will create a new business type for you - simply fill in the contact form and we'll mail you as soon as it's live.

Absolutely! You've got three options:

  • Register a new domain — search for an available name and register it through TecNut. We handle everything from registration to renewal.
  • Transfer an existing domain — already own a domain with another registrar? Transfer it to TecNut so everything is under one roof. You'll need your authorisation code (EPP code) from your current provider. Transfers typically take 5-7 days.
  • Use an external domain — keep your domain where it is and just point it at your TecNut website. You'll need to create a DNS A record pointing to our server — we'll walk you through it.

All three options are available from your Domains page in the dashboard. Once you've got a domain set up, you can connect it to your website from the domain management page.

If you've got auto-renewal turned on (which we recommend), you don't need to do anything — we'll charge your card on file and renew it automatically before it expires.

To check your auto-renewal setting, go to your Domains page, click Manage on the domain, and look for the Auto-Renewal section. Green means auto-renew is on. Red means it's set to expire — you'll need to renew manually.

Important: Auto-renewal only works if you have a valid primary payment card on your account. If your card has expired, update it in your Account Settings.

For external domains (registered with another provider), renewal is handled by your current registrar — not by us.

Head to your Settings page (click the gear icon in the dashboard navigation).

To change your email: Click Change Email, enter your new email address, and we'll send a verification code to the new address. Enter the code to confirm the change.

To change your password: Click Change Password, enter your current password and your new one (twice to confirm), then save. Your new password must be at least 8 characters.

You can also update your personal details (name, address, phone) and manage your payment cards from the same page.

Once you have a domain and a live (production) website, connecting them is quick:

  1. Go to your Domains page
  2. Click Manage on the domain you want to connect
  3. Find the Website Connection section
  4. Select your website from the dropdown
  5. Click Connect Website

Your website will now be served at that domain name. It may take a little while for DNS to propagate (the internet catching up with the change), but it's usually pretty quick.

Note: Only production websites can be connected to a domain — trials can't have a custom domain assigned. Upgrade your trial to a paid plan first, then connect your domain.
